Northern lights may be visible on Thanksgiving night in Vermont

It looks like Thanksgiving night will be a little brighter, at least in the night sky in Vermont.

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Space Weather Prediction Center, the Northern Lights, also called the Aurora Borealis, could be visible in Vermont and some parts of the United States on the night of November 28.

On Tuesday, the government’s forecast center issued a warning that a geomagnetic storm could occur on Thursday.

Officials predict the geomagnetic storm, in which a flare of solar material and magnetic fields reaches Earth, could bring colorful auroras over some northern states as well as parts of the Midwest.

“Clocks of this level are not common,” NOAA said.

When will the Northern Lights be visible in Vermont?

“A G1 (Minor) watch was issued for November 28th and a G2 (Moderate) watch for November 29th due to a CME associated with a filament burst arriving late on November 25th that uplifted the Sun,” said NOAA.

The coronal mass ejection, which could cause a geomagnetic storm, is expected to arrive on Thanksgiving Day and last through Black Friday.

However, the lights may be difficult to see because snow is forecast for Thanksgiving in Vermont and cloud cover and seeing the lights do not mix. However, with the storm set to end in the evening, there is a chance that the skies will clear.

Where will the Northern Lights be visible?

The aurora is predicted to be visible over parts of New England and the upper region of the Northeast and Midwest.

How to see the Northern Lights

The best time to see an aurora is when it’s dark, usually between one and two hours before midnight, according to NOAA. Officials recommend staying away from city lights and staying at lower latitudes.
