The Red Wings beat the Flames in overtime and stay in the points series

The Detroit Red Wings made things difficult for themselves by repeatedly going to the penalty box at a crucial time, but ended their night with a celebration.

They were minutes away from a clean performance at Little Caesars Arena on Wednesday after scoring early, limiting the good shots Cam Talbot saw and converting three penalties just to allow the Calgary Flames to equalize. Lucas Raymond saved the night with a power play goal with 1:25 left in overtime, helping the Wings to a 2-1 victory.

“I really wanted the shutout tonight, just the way we played,” coach Derek Lalonde said. “So it was unfortunate – too many penalties.”

“Four was just too many, it was just a matter of time. But what a complete game, from start to finish.”

The Wings (10-10-2) have won three of their last four games and have picked up points in four of their last five games.

Raymond extended his scoring streak to four games when he received a pass from Alex DeBrincat and beat Dan Vladar with a wrist shot.

“It felt good,” Raymond said. “I lead for almost 50 minutes, it’s hard to give up a late lead. I’m glad we’re getting back on our feet.”

DeBrincat scored his ninth goal of the season. The Wings, whose penalty kill had fallen to the bottom of the league, found themselves outnumbered twice in the third period and were beaten while Dylan Larkin was in the box for a faceoff violation and gave up a goal to Connor Zary with 2:48 minutes left in the game Regulation.

“We bent, but most of the time we couldn’t break,” Talbot said after making 24 saves. “If anything, we let them have it most of the game.

“If you give up that late, you can do one of two things: either pay up and give them the game back, or come out in overtime and score the winning goal. We did a good job mentally not to let that come to us and end with a win.”

Patrick Kane missed a second straight game with an upper-body injury and Ville Husso was recalled from the minors to serve as a backup after Alex Lyon tweaked something during the morning skate.

The first five minutes took place almost entirely in the Wings’ zone, as the Flames circulated the puck and disrupted any attempt by the Wings to break out. Their luck changed when they played their first power play, when DeBrincat converted a short pass from Michael Rasmussen into a 1-0 lead.

Less than a minute after that goal, the Wings started another power play – and then a third, all before the halfway point of the first period. However, their third ball only lasted 27 seconds as Dylan Larkin was caught for holding.

Limiting opportunities

The Wings were back at even strength and did a better job of sustaining an attack on Flames goaltender Dan Vladar while also limiting good chances against Talbot. Daniil Miromanov made a quick escape as he eluded the Wings defenders, but Talbot saw him coming and was ready when he made a glove save to block Miromanov’s wrist shot attempt from the right circle.

The Wings had an 8-7 advantage in shots after the first period, with Raymond attempting a tip-in attempt with seconds left.

Keep it close

The Wings had a dozen shots on goal at halftime of the game and could have had more had they not missed their shooting opportunities. There were times where they just passed the puck around. There was also a rush when Christian Fischer got away with a breakaway.

He sent the puck over the right side to the net. He adjusted his own shot and pushed the puck to Rasmussen, whose shot was easily deflected by Vladar.

However, no one looked more frustrated than Vladimir Tarasenko when his slap shot failed in the final minute of the second period. He hasn’t scored a goal since the fifth game of the season.
