Showers and mixing as well as slippery rides in places are expected

Kevin Skarupa has some time off as we could see travel impacts on Thanksgiving.

The busy travel time for Granite Staters to their weekend vacation destination is fast approaching. The first of two systems is on the way this morning. Winter weather warning until 1pm this afternoon, with rainfall starting after 6 or 7am. Some slippery patches with temperatures just below freezing in the north and possibly a few central parts of the state moving away from there should be mixed skies, sunshine and clouds for the busy journey later this afternoon. Wednesday. Temperatures will be in the 30s to 40s, not just here in New Hampshire but across the Northeast, and then watching a potential storm system with a combination of rain and wet snow starting Thursday morning could make for some messy travel on Thanksgiving Day and possible into the evening before this system collapses. Black Friday should be quiet for most of the weekend, but it will be chilly when we get there. Therefore, the road, which is mostly confined to the northern half and third of the state, would not be surprising if there were a few slippery patches in some southwestern areas by about 10 a.m. this morning. Again, no travel hassles for your busy Wednesday here in New Hampshire and throughout the Northeast. And then we see the damn system start to take hold on Thanksgiving morning. Probably more or less sunrise. We will be looking for a *** combination of rain and wet snow from this system. The peak will be reached during the afternoon before easing later in the evening with a few slippery patches remaining first thing on Friday morning, otherwise we’re expecting fine skies and strong winds with cool temperatures heading into the weekend. So that’s a pretty darn fast system with probably about a quarter of an inch of actual precipitation flowing out of it. Most of it is receding, with the trailing edge moving across the state during the afternoon. And the Thanksgiving Day system is still very reliable 2,500 miles away in the Rocky Mountains this morning. So there’s still some time left, 50 miles away one way or another. We are determining where the rain-snow line will be in the mid 30s to 40s of these highs by 3:00 this afternoon. So it’s going to be a heck of a long time before we get above the freezing mark first thing this morning, and it’ll finally calm down in the afternoon. There is a period of rain which will mainly rain in the southern areas of the state and will mix in the north until around midday or one o’clock when the rainy season subsides. We’ll watch the beginning dry out when we get to work in the evening. And later tonight, with fair skies, there’s a mix of sunshine and clouds for your busy trip on Wednesday, and then clouds will thicken on Wednesday evening. And as you’ll notice, there will be a *** snowfall mark somewhere in the state of New Hampshire on Thursday. Any precipitation will begin early in the day, with or without sunrise, and we will build from there and increase throughout the morning, peaking in the afternoon before finally tapering off later Thursday evening. If you head out early for Black Friday, you should be fine. Just a few slippery spots left over from what we had on Thanksgiving Day. This is likely to cause strong northwesterly winds not only on Friday but on both days. A few snow showers are definitely possible in the mountains over the weekend, but that should be all as far as travel issues go. Our first look at any type of accumulation from this system. And again, the rain-snow line will be somewhere in the southern half of the state. Since it’s still 2,500 miles away, it’s currently difficult to know exactly where each city will be across the state. But we still have 48 hours until arrival and that will give us enough time to move these bands around a bit to get a little better idea of what’s going to happen next. But that’s just a first impression of what awaits us on Thursday afternoon and Thursday evening. This all ends very early on Friday morning, making for much calmer weather, but ease the air with brisk winds for the weekend.

The busy Thanksgiving travel week is here and there could be an impact. After a round of rain (some mixing north) things are looking clear today on Wednesday. However, a potentially larger and more devastating storm is more likely on Thanksgiving Day. At the beginning it may snow lightly and mix, then it quickly changes to rain in the south/east. North/west of Concord it can snow all the time. It’s dry again on Black Friday and much of the weekend away from the mountains (light snow until Saturday!) Rain showers start this morning. Initially it will likely be cold enough for some mixing, with some slippery conditions expected across the northern half of New Hampshire. Any showers will end late in the day. The maximum temperatures vary between 36 and 44° from north to south. Tonight there will be partial clearing, with lows falling to values above 20 to below 30 degrees. Wednesday will be windy and dry across the south, with isolated snow showers far north. Highs are usually in the 40s. There’s a chance of a little snow and rain on Thanksgiving morning as another system could get close enough that there could be some snow, mixing or rain by Thursday evening. This could have a big impact on travel, especially if you’re traveling north and west of Concord. Right now, the biggest chance of more than 6 inches of snow is in central New Hampshire. We will continue to refine the details as the system gets closer.
