Dolphins vs. Packers: Green Bay ends Thanksgiving carving Miami

The Green Bay Packers enjoyed a late-night Thanksgiving feast Thursday with cold weather, long range and some awkwardness in the later parts of the meal.

At the end of the first half, the Packers had a 24-3 lead over the Miami Dolphins. At the final whistle the score was 30-17 at Lambeau Field. They had little trouble moving the ball on offense, while their defense benefited from a cold-weather Miami team struggling to string together offenses and making mistakes along the way, including a botched punt. It was a familiar story for the dolphins in cold weather.

The temperature was 27 degrees at kick-off and only got colder from there. The Dolphins’ biggest mistake was a straight muff punt that set up the Packers’ first touchdown, and there was no redemption until after halftime.

The second half brought at least some drama as the Dolphins scored a touchdown and converted the two-point try to cut the deficit to 16. They soon got back into the red zone and were on second-and-goal at the 1-yard line.

The next three plays: Rush for no gain, incomplete pass, sack.

Jordan Love finished the game completing 21 of 27 passes for 274 yards and two touchdowns, while the Green Bay run game added 114 yards. The Dolphins’ offense wasn’t completely frozen – Tua Tagovailoa finished with 364 yards passing – but they just couldn’t run the ball when it mattered most.

The loss is costly for the Dolphins, who now sit well outside the playoff standings at 5-7. They have had positive results in the last five games of the season (Jets, Texans, 49ers, Browns, Jets), but even if they win, they will likely need help.

The Packers have now moved to 9-3, still only good for third place in a stacked NFC North. The Detroit Lions also won 11-1 on Thursday to stay two games ahead, while the 9-2 Minnesota Vikings will face the 6-5 Arizona Cardinals on Sunday.

  • FINAL: Packers 30, Dolphins 17

    The Packers picked up their third straight win, while the Dolphins suffered another defeat in cold weather. This game seemed to be over at halftime, got a little interesting in the third quarter, and then turned into a clear win.

  • The Packers hit a home run on 3rd and 11 with a deep pass to Christian Watson. It was a perfect ball, but heavy contact from the Miami secondary resulted in an incompletion. The Packers aren’t happy, but that shouldn’t really matter.

    It’s the Dolphins’ ball with 1:56 left, 13 minutes behind. Another time out.

  • The Packers recover the onside kick. You can end it with a few first downs here.

  • TOUCHDOWN: Dolphins make score a little more respectable with a deflected TD

    Tagovailoa happens to find Tyreek Hill for his second touchdown pass of the game (good). Two-point conversion fails (badly). The Dolphins trail 30-17 with 3:04 remaining and need several onside kicks to get to the right to avoid going 507 (ugly).

  • Trailing by three points with five minutes left, the Dolphins retained Tua Tagovailoa — whose career was in doubt earlier this season due to concussions — to close out this game. Secure.

  • FIELD GOAL: The Packers go up 19 to effectively end the game

    Five minutes left and no drama. The Packers have a lead of 19 and just have to worry about staying warm for the rest of the game.

  • Big momentum there. Jayden Reed drops a pass on the screen and the ball is sent all the way back to the end zone… but replay confirms it’s an incomplete pass. It was a tense few seconds for the Packers.

  • Josh Jacobs shakes off a tackle, tackles a defender and then runs 49 yards to get the Packers into the red zone. It is the longest reception of his career.

  • That was painful from the Dolphins. They got the ball to the Green Bay 1-yard line and then were stopped on three consecutive plays.

  • TURNOVER ON DOWNS: Dolphins are stopped on 4th-and-goal

    Trailing 27-11 with 9:39 left, the Dolphins attempt to collect a sack by Tua Tagovailoa from Quay Walker. An offensive hold flag is rejected, and that could be the game.

  • Tua Tagovailoa takes the Dolphins to the edge of the red zone with a pass to Odell Beckham Jr., but is knocked down by an unblocked Rashan Gary. There was some discussion about a harsh penalty on the passer, but the lack of contact with the helmet saves the Packers.

  • The Dolphins get a much-needed stop and take over their own 18. Since they currently have 16 and a full quarter to play, things aren’t quite over yet.
