Democratic lawmakers are calling on progressives to stop leaving X

Rep. Ro Khanna of California said in a recent interview that progressives should stay on X since many have already deactivated their accounts due to President-elect Trump’s victory.

“I think everything he has said publicly is that he believes in free and open expression and we need more platforms. I don’t think X should be the only platform,” Khanna told Politico during a podcast interview.

Khanna spoke with Anne McElvoy during an interview on Politico’s “Power Play” podcast. Several progressives have fled X, formerly known as Twitter, owned by billionaire Elon Musk.

“I don’t just stay, I use it all the time… I don’t think the answer for progressives is to retreat,” Khanna added.

After the election results, liberal experts in particular made it a point to avoid X.

MSNBC host Nicolle Wallace told viewers that she deleted her X app as an “act of self-preservation.”

“I deleted Twitter today out of self-preservation because I could no longer find the things that interested me. I saw a lot of things I didn’t see,” she said. Wallace’s account remains active on the platform.

Former CNN anchor Don Lemon released a statement Wednesday announcing his departure from X, telling his 1.5 million followers that “it’s time for me to leave the platform.”

Liberals have also reportedly turned away from the news in general in light of Trump’s victory.

“Now we have the distortion of public space by financial interests and by digital spaces in which not everyone can participate equally. And we should focus on how we create more town hall-like spaces for online conversation,” Khanna told Politico.
