A new game from Tencent looks like a pretty blatant rip-off of Horizon

Details have just been released on an epic-looking upcoming sci-fi adventure game. The images and teaser trailer show a post-apocalyptic world where people in primitive garb fight against giant, dinosaur-like robots while rousing orchestral music plays. It all seems a little familiar to me. But wait, this isn’t Guerrilla’s next Horizon game. Oh no, no. This is a first look at a game from a Tencent subsidiary called Polaris Quest.

Guerrilla and Sony don’t exactly have a monopoly on tamable robot dinosaurs or open-world crafting games. But at first glance Light of Motiram is a pretty blatant rip off of Horizon. It mimics Guerrilla’s art style and animations, right down to the numerous lens flares. One image shows a trio of human characters fighting a mammoth-style machine with bows and spears. Even the font and description of the game’s logo mimics Horizon’s – Light of Motiram is about humanity’s attempt to “rebuild from the dawn of a new primeval era.”

There are some differences when it comes to fairness. Here you can build your own shelters, while trained “Mechanimals” can help you in battle. There is also co-op support for up to 10 players. While Guerrilla is working on a multiplayer game, the latest is Lego Horizon Adventures Spinoff is the only Horizon game to date to offer co-op.

In some ways, fans of the Horizon series will understand why it’s fitting that the games actually appear to be clones. We’ll have to wait and see how egregiously Polaris Quest copied Aloy’s adventures. Light of Motiram There’s no release window yet, but the seemingly free-to-play title appears on Steam and the Epic Games Store. Unless Sony first proposes a cease and desist letter to Tencent.
