This is it for Travis Hunter and the Colorado Buffaloes – the regular season finale at home against Oklahoma State. The Buffs (8-3) will still play in the postseason, possibly in the Alamo Bowl or Holiday Bowl next month — or maybe even the College Football Playoff if enough dominoes fall their way in other games Saturday.

But tonight’s game at noon ET on ABC will be the last time voters will be able to watch the Heisman Trophy Hunter before Heisman ballots are distributed to those voters on Monday.

Hunter, the star cornerback receiver, is the current favorite to win the award, according to BetMGM. The problem for Hunter is that the oddsmakers aren’t picking the Heisman winner. This is what fickle sportswriters do, as do former Heisman winners.

Surprisingly, Hunter wasn’t even named one of the three finalists for the Jim Thorpe Award, given annually to the country’s best defensive back.

The lesson learned might be to take nothing for granted, especially today against the Cowboys (3-8), who have lost eight straight games and are ranked 133rd^approx of 134 major college teams in total defense with 503.3 yards allowed per game. Hunter could use another big appearance in the national spotlight to further his Heisman candidacy. Colorado coach Deion Sanders also needs to win this game to strengthen his team’s standing heading into the postseason.

Colorado takes an early 7-0 lead

Travis Hunter snagged an interception less than two minutes after kickoff. It came on Oklahoma State’s first possession when he returned it seven yards to the OSU 24-yard line to set up a 1-yard touchdown run by freshman running back Micah Welch three plays later.

Colorado leads 7-0 with 12:03 left in the first quarter.

It was Hunter’s fourth interception of the season.

Can Colorado still win the Big 12 Conference?

Yes, but the Buffs have to beat Oklahoma State today and then need help from at least two other Big 12 teams on Saturday. After suffering a tough loss to Kansas last week, they now face off in a four-way battle for first place with BYU, Iowa State and Arizona State, each of which has a 6-2 record in league play and one game remaining have left in the regular season.

The Buffs would advance to the Big 12 Championship Game on Dec. 7 if they beat Oklahoma State and lose at least two of those other first-place teams on Saturday: BYU at home against Houston, Iowa State at home against Kansas State and Arizona State at Arizona.

Or if BYU loses and Texas Tech beats West Virginia, the Buffs would also be in the championship game, even if they are in a three-way battle for first place with Iowa State and Arizona State. In this scenario, Colorado wins the tiebreaker due to the fact that Texas Tech will be a second-place team that was beaten by Colorado but not by Arizona State or Iowa State this season. But if Tech loses in this case, the Buffs wouldn’t make it.

Can Colorado still make it to the College Football Playoff?

Yes, but it’s far-fetched. The Buffs finished 25th^Th in the current playoff rankings. The top five ranked conference champions earn automatic playoff spots, along with seven major teams.

To make the playoffs, the Buffs would have to play in the Big 12 Championship Game (see above) and win that game on December 7th. But winning the Big 12 might still not be enough for Colorado to move far enough up the rankings to grab a major berth. Surpassing one of the other five league champions might not be enough to clinch an automatic spot either.

Teams from five other leagues are currently ahead of Colorado, although No. 17 Tulane of the American Athletic Conference suffered a loss to Memphis on Thursday, which will cause Tulane to drop in the rankings.

The final playoff pairings will be announced on December 8th.
