UNC fires Hall of Fame football coach before rivalry game

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (WBTV) – The University of North Carolina is firing its Hall of Fame national championship-winning head coach School announced Tuesday morning.

Mack Brown, in his second stint with the Tar Heels, has more wins than any other coach in program history.

UNC is 6-5 heading into its regular season finale against rival North Carolina State. The university said Brown will practice against the Wolfpack, but a decision has not yet been made about the Tar Heels’ bowl game.

“We deeply appreciate everything he has done for Carolina football and our university,” UNC athletic director Bubba Cunningham said. “He and his wife Sally have done an outstanding job supporting the Carolina community, including by raising funds for UNC Children’s Hospital and hosting other popular events such as the Ladies Day Clinic. Both have led our program superbly through some incredibly difficult periods, including the tragic ones Pass from wide receiver Tylee Craft.”

Cunningham credited Brown for improving program facilities, expanding staff, increasing salaries and strengthening the team’s nutrition, strength and conditioning programs.

Brown was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2018 and won the national championship with the University of Texas in 2005.

He began his current tenure at Chapel Hill in 2019 after previously coaching at the school from 1988 to 1997. Brown was also the head coach at Appalachian State in 1983.
