Max Christie on his rash foul late in Friday’s loss to the Thunder

The Los Angeles Lakers made a number of mistakes in their 101-93 loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder on Friday, but one seemed to stand out more than the others.

With 22.1 seconds left in the fourth quarter and the Lakers trailing 95-93, Thunder star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander was number one. Los Angeles guard Max Christie fouled him in a way that suggested Christie thought LA had a foul to call. But the team didn’t, so Gilgeous-Alexander was given two free throws, both of which he made.

Head coach JJ Redick said afterward that Christie looked at him during the defensive possession and he signaled to Christie that Christie might have misread him.

Christie said he misinterpreted Redick’s signal and took responsibility for this rash foul.

Had Christie Gilgeous-Alexander not fouled, the Lakers might have gotten a defensive stop and rebound that would have given them a chance to tie or win the game. Instead, their record has fallen to 11-8, and although they sit in sixth place in the Western Conference, they have now lost four of their last five games after winning six in a row.
