Purdue Basketball vs. Ole Miss Player Ratings

Myles Colvin was California cool under pressure on Friday night.

Over the final 26 minutes, Purdue Basketball blew a 17-point lead and then rallied from a seven-point deficit.

In the end, Colvin’s last-second putback lifted the Boilermakers past Ole Miss 80-78 to win the Rady Children’s Invitational in San Diego after beating North Carolina State earlier on Thursday.

The Boilermakers responded to an Ole Miss offensive attack by committing eight turnovers in the second half.

RESOLUTIONS

Braden Smith: 8/10

Smith’s shooting woes disappeared with four straight three-pointers in the first half. He gave Purdue its big lead early. He made a rare mistake when he didn’t realize the first half was winding down and Purdue didn’t get a shot in the final seconds. Make up for this by fading along the baseline on Purdue’s final possession, allowing enough time for an offensive rebound. Smith totaled 18 points, 11 assists and 6 rebounds, solidifying his reputation as the best point guard in Purdue history.

Fletcher Loyer: 7/10

One such heads-up player is Loyer, who scored 13 points on 4 of 7 shooting on Friday. He has now reached double figures in all but one game (Marshall) this season. He had a few ball losses. Loyer’s right hand runner is king, and he never seems to fail when hitting a big shot.

Myles Colvin: 9/10

Of course, you can pick and choose a few moments, but the sophomore picked a great night to play his career game. He scored 15 points in the second half alone, surpassing his previous career high, and ended up with 20. With six tenths of a second left, he also had the offensive rebound, one of four rebounds.

Cam Heath: 5/10

Heide’s offense cooled off for the first time in three starts. He scored his only two points from the free throw line. Heide showed off his athleticism by making an impressive block at the rim in the second half.

Trey Kaufman Renn: 8/10

Is Kaufman-Renn entering Zach Edey territory where we point out where he struggles despite being the key ingredient to success? Kaufman-Renn had 25 points and 13 rebounds. He shot 8 of 12. He and Smith appear to be the most dangerous doubles combination in the Big Ten. He now needs to improve on free throws.

RESERVES

Gicarri Harris: 3/10

Purdue still needs the freshman for his ball handling and defense, an area where he will continue to improve. But right now his outside shot is nonexistent. Teams are just letting Harrison sub from 3 right now. He is 3-of-20 for the season after going 0-for-4 on Friday.

Caleb Fürst: 4/10

Purdue needs Furst to make simple plays, help out on defense and grab rebounds. The lone Boilermaker senior struggled to finish plays at the rim.
