Vanderbilt junior Sherrill takes the opening kickoff for a 100-yard TD against Tennessee

Anything can happen during Rivalry Week, including losing a potential spot in the College Football Playoff.

At least that’s what Vanderbilt football is showing at the start of Saturday’s rivalry game against No. 8 Tennessee thanks to sophomore wide receiver Junior Sherrill.

The Commodores returner took the opening kickoff the full distance from the back of the Vanderbilt end zone to the back of the Tennessee end zone, giving Vanderbilt an early 7-0 lead at FirstBank Stadium. Sherrill’s 100-yard return was his first kickoff return in college.

Sherrill’s kickoff return gave the Commodores early juice on both ends of the ball as CJ Taylor forced a fumble from the hands of Vols running back Dylan Sampson two plays into Tennessee’s next drive. Vanderbilt would cash in on Taylor’s caused turnover for seven points as Sedrick Alexander scored a four-yard touchdown down the right side.
