Arrest following a police standoff along Route 83 in Oak Brook

OAK BROOK, Ill. – One person is in custody after a brief standoff with police along Route 83 in the western suburbs Wednesday afternoon.

According to Oak Brook police, the incident began around 2:35 p.m. after officers received an alert from license plate reading technology that a vehicle wanted in connection with a burglary and retail theft had entered the Oakbrook Center Mall.

Officers located the vehicle shortly thereafter and attempted to initiate a traffic stop, but said the driver allegedly refused to stop and continued westbound on West 22nd Street.

The driver allegedly continued to flee and crashed into another car near the intersection of West 22nd Street and Route 83.

Officers continued to follow the driver until he came to a stop in the northbound lanes of Route 83 near West 22nd Street. But after being stopped, the driver refused to exit the vehicle despite numerous commands from police, officials said.

Officers used a “less-lethal” beanbag round to remove the rear window of the vehicle to take a look inside. They then realized the driver was the only person in the car and said they were taken into custody without further incident.

After their arrest, officers said the driver of the vehicle was taken to the hospital after complaining of pain from the accident.

“This deployment underscores the department’s commitment to protecting public safety and deploying strategic and measured responses to high-risk situations,” said Oak Brook Deputy Police Chief Robert Christopherson. “Our officers acted quickly and professionally to bring the situation to a safe resolution.”

SkyCam 9 was over the scene around 3 p.m., shortly after officers gained access to the vehicle.

The incident caused traffic jams in the area, which was already clogged with holiday traffic near the mall.

No bystanders were injured in the incident and an investigation into the burglary and retail theft is ongoing.

Authorities have not filed or announced any charges against the person allegedly involved.
