Best Buy is beating Walmart at one of its own games this Black Friday, and this game has “the cheapest possible*”Insert size here* TV of the season.” My current favorite example is Hisense’s 55-inch QLED TV, available at Best Buy for $219.99 – not far off Walmart’s cheapest 55-inch 4K TV offering without QLED for $178.

And that competition is exactly why Black Friday is one of the best times (if not the best) of the year to buy a TV.

But unless you’re a seasoned shopping reporter who makes a living keeping track of product prices, these numbers may mean nothing to you without context. The context here is simply in comparison to other existing TV deals as well as the prices of last year’s Black Friday TV deals.

Placing Best Buy’s offering next to Walmart’s cheapest 55-inch QLED for Thanksgiving, a $288 Hisense model, quickly proves how much of a bargain it is, the same size and backlight for $219.99. Find dollars. Back to Black Friday 2023: The cheapest 55-inch QLED TV at that time cost $348. Alternatively, our favorite 2023 Fire TV deal was a regular 50-inch LED model that was also…wait for it…$219.99.

In 2024, the same wad of money will get you an extra five inches of screen size and a layer of quantum dots over traditional LED backlighting for visibly brighter, more saturated colors. If you’re an athlete, switching to a QLED TV is crucial as the increased brightness makes it much easier to track small movements on the screen, especially during the day. (As one of the simpler QLEDs on the market, no one is claiming that this is the brightest, smoothest-moving QLED on the market. But if you’re more of a casual observer than an avid gamer, you probably won’t care .)
