SMU must travel east to defeat Clemson in a Charlotte ACC Championship Game for the first time.

The line in the game reflects how difficult this can be.

FanDuel opened the series as SMU led by just 1.5 points despite a commanding 11-1 overall record and an 8-0 record in conference play.

Clemson compiled a 7-1 record in ACC play with back-to-back ACC road wins at Pitt and Virginia Tech before a disappointing regular season finish to rival South Carolina (a 17-14 loss).

Clemson is 7-0 in the ACC Championship Games, which were held in Charlotte from 2011 to 2022.

The winner is on track to guarantee a berth in the College Football Playoff, and both could do it with a Tigers win sending the Mustangs to an at-large bid. SMU would clinch a top-four spot and a bye with a win, while the Tigers would still have to finish ahead of the Big 12 or the Mountain West champion to get into the top four with a win. As one of the five top-seeded conference champions, Clemson could be in the field for a first-round CFP trip as early as 12th if they don’t secure a bye.

The game is scheduled to kick off at Bank of America Stadium on Saturday at 8 p.m. It airs on ABC.
