The second leg of the quarterfinal between Cruz Azul and Club Tijuana will take place on Saturday evening when Cruz Azul takes on Club Tijuana looking to make a historic comeback.

After dominating the Liga MX season and finishing first in the Apertura season by seven points with a record of 13-3-1, Cruz Azul now faces elimination in the quarterfinals as the club is 0-3 Tijuana lost to Club in the first leg of their two-game series. Considering that Cruz Azul has been disappointing relative to expectations in the past, the club will be desperate to defy that narrative and make the comeback against Club Tijuana on Saturday.

In Club Tijuana’s opener, Jose Raul Zuniga Murillo, Efrain Alvarez and Emanuel Reynoso all scored in the first half. To make matters worse for Cruz Azul, Jorge Sanchez received a red card in the 34th minute and is therefore suspended for the second leg on Saturday evening.

Club Tijuana finished seventh in the Apertura season and needed to defeat Atlas on November 24 to have any chance of facing Cruz Azul in the playoffs. That’s because Tijuana lost to Club America on penalties the game before, with a playoff spot at stake. Regardless, thanks to goals from Murillo and Kevin Castañeda, Club Tijuana defeated Atlas 3-0 to secure that spot.
