Iowa women’s basketball provides update on injury to star point guard

Iowa fans watching the Hawkeyes’ 69-62 victory over Rhode Island on Thanksgiving Day probably had the same thought.

Where was Iowa’s star senior point guard Lucy Olsen?

Before the game on the Hawkeye Radio Network, Iowa women’s basketball coach Jan Jensen explained that Olsen suffered an unusual injury before one of Iowa’s practices in Cancun.

“Yeah, you know, it’s just a unique situation. And so often in life, sometimes surprising, unfortunate, unfortunate situations happen. Lucy, we were getting ready for practice, she tripped, came off the ground and then hit a ledge and she had a pretty big gash in her knee.

“Luckily we had some team documents with us and they looked after them, but it’s just a game-by-game situation because it’s a pretty significant cut. But fortunately nothing that changes or ends the season. It’s just a pretty tough cut, so we just want to be careful and smart because the season is still very young. “Lucy is tough, and I know that once she’s ready to go, she’ll be ready,” Jensen told Swisher about Olsen’s injury status.

It’s a big loss for Iowa, no matter how long Olsen is sidelined. Olsen is averaging 17.3 points per game, a team-high. The 5-foot-10 guard is also averaging 5.3 assists and 4.5 rebounds per game while shooting at 48.9%.

Iowa used a strong fourth-quarter push to pull away from Rhode Island and improve to 7-0. The Hawkeyes began the fourth quarter with a 12-0 spurt.

Senior center Addison O’Grady led the way with 18 points on 8-of-9 shooting. Junior forward Hannah Stuelke added 13 points and senior guard Kylie Feuerbach scored 12.

Iowa plays BYU (6-1) in its final game of the Cancun Challenge on Friday night at 8 p.m. CT. The game will be streamed exclusively on FloCollege.
