The most important game of the season for the Cincinnati Bearcats football team takes place on the coldest night of the season. Temperatures are expected to be around 20 degrees as coach Scott Satterfield’s team hosts TCU in a bowl game.

The Horned Frogs are already eligible to play at 7-4, while UC, at 5-6, must break a four-game deficit and earn a sixth win to qualify for the postseason. For the Horned Frogs, Josh Hoover is the sixth ranked passer in the country. They also feature 6-foot-1, 220-pound receiver/running back/Wildcat quarterback Savion Williams, who ran for 80 yards and two touchdowns in last week’s 49-28 win over Arizona.

The Bearcats moved 20 yards on six plays on their first drive of the day, none of which moved more than four yards, but they stopped at their own 42-yard line. Mason Fletcher’s punt was returned to the TCU 23-yard line.

After taking over at the Cincinnati 29-yard line following the fumbled punt, the TCU Horned Frogs drove 29 yards in seven plays. Savion Williams scored the first goal of the game from two meters away.

The Bearcats forced a three-pointer on TCU’s first drive of the game. On the punt, the Bearcats stuffed the ball and a group of Horned Frogs fell on it.

Injury updates for Cincinnati Bearcats vs. TCU Horned Frogs

UC linebacker Jake Golday attempted to play at Kansas State but was forced out of the game. The staff was optimistic that Golday would be able to leave on Saturday. TCU had receivers Major Everhart and Jo Jo Earle injured earlier this month. Neither are starters and are considered questionable.

In the preseason predictions, I had a 6-6 record, which would be a bowl bid. I didn’t necessarily expect it to go that way, and to be honest, UC should already be at six wins since they shouldn’t have imploded in the fourth quarter against Pitt in Week 2.

Before the season, I had TCU 27-26, but if there is still unity and brotherhood on the team, I think they can find a way to get a win. The lousy weather could be a blessing if it hinders TCU’s throwing game. It was another year of winnable games lost, but not that many. Maybe Mother Nature will get some help on Saturday.

Did current Cincinnati Bengals go to TCU?

Two players on the Bengals’ current roster, both rookies, played college ball at TCU.

Cornerback Josh Newton, a fifth-round pick in the last NFL draft, started all 27 games for the Horned Frogs in 2022-23 and recorded 24 passes defended and four interceptions in those contests. He transferred from Louisiana-Monroe before the 2022 season and had 12 pass breakups in 2022, ranking second in the Big 12. This season, TCU reached the College Football Playoff.

Offensive tackle Andrew Coker is currently on the Bengals practice squad. In 2022, when TCU won the national championship, he was named honorable mention All-Big 12. He was originally signed as an undrafted free agent by the Las Vegas Raiders, but was later released. The Bengals signed him to their practice squad on October 22, 2024.

Former longtime Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton also transferred to TCU.

How many Big 12 teams make the College Football Playoff?

Automatic bids go to the top five ranked conference champions. Technically, the Big 12 could be eliminated from the dance if the CFP selection committee places two Group of Five champions ahead of the Big 12 champion. It’s unlikely, but technically possible.

Arizona State (9-2) was the highest-ranked Big 12 team in the current CFP rankings at No. 16, closely followed by Iowa State and BYU at No. 18 and 19, respectively. One Group of Five team is ahead of them Top 12 teams, and that’s Boise State from the Mountain West (10-1).

What could be a concern for the Big 12 is the fact that Tulane (9-2), an American Conference team, is one spot behind Arizona State. If the Big 12 continues to play itself and the conference champion has a three-loss team, assuming Tulane goes undefeated, the Big 12 could find itself without an automatic bid.
