Piedmont is mourning the loss of three of its members

Vigil for accident victims draws hundreds on Friday evening

Friends of the victims’ families organized a candlelight vigil in Piedmont Park on Friday evening, drawing hundreds of students, teachers, families and residents downtown. Former Piedmont Community Church youth leader Scott Kail gave brief remarks and urged those gathered to care for one another in the future.

PUSD responds to tragedy

“The loss of young lives is a profound tragedy that is made even more difficult during the holiday season. Let us come together as a community to support each other, create space for grief and extend care to those affected by this devastating loss,” said Dr. Piedmont Unified School District Superintendent Jennifer Hawn said in an email to the school community on Wednesday.

On Friday, the principal and assistant principal of Piedmont High School sent a note to families about the coming week.

We remain deeply saddened by the tragedy that occurred in our community early Wednesday morning. The media has reported that this tragedy involved four Piedmont High School graduates, three of whom lost their lives, and a fourth person remains hospitalized.

We know there are few things that can hit a community harder than the loss of a young person, and we grieve too. At this time, we ask everyone to respect the families’ privacy as they navigate these most difficult times.

On Monday, our Counseling and Wellness Center staff will be available to support our students. Any student who needs this support can contact their advisor or wellness center. Any employees who need additional support in dealing with this tragedy can also use the wellness center. If necessary, please arrange insurance with a colleague.
