Stocks rose Friday at the start of a shortened trading day that will cap a strong month for stocks.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average climbed 141 points, or 0.3%, on track for another record close. The S&P 500 And Nasdaq Composite 0.4% and 0.5% added respectively.

Part of the upward momentum came from chip stocks, which rose sharply after Bloomberg reported that the Biden administration was considering additional barriers to selling semiconductor equipment to China that were not as strong as previously expected. Applied materials And Lam research rose by more than 2 or 3% Nvidia jumped by more than 1% iShares Semiconductor ETF (SOXX) added more than 1%.

These steps occur when traders wait for the end of a successful week and month. November trading was largely focused on the post-election rebound driven by President-elect Donald Trump’s victory.

The Dow has gained more than 1% for the week so far, putting it at over 7% for November. This is the Dow’s best month since November 2023. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite are up 0.7% and 0.4%, respectively, this week. Both are expected to end the penultimate month of 2024 more than 5% higher.

The small cap focus Russell 2000 outperformed in November as investors saw the group benefit from Trump’s potential tax cuts. The Russell 2000 is up more than 11% this month, helped by a gain of more than 1% this week.

The stock market was dark on Thursday and will close at 1:00 pm ET on Friday for the Thanksgiving holiday. No significant economic data or corporate earnings reports are expected for Friday. Trading is expected to be light.
