The Miami Dolphins have refused to activate Shaq Barrett, will not release him and will remain retired

Shaq Barretta former All-Pro linebacker and two-time Super Bowl championAfter announcing his retirement from the NFL in July, he has requested immediate reinstatement to play, although he is not assured he will play this year. Barrett is contractually committed to the team and will not be removed from the reserve/retired list this season. The Dolphins also have no intention of releasing him, which prevents him from playing for another team during the playoff push.

Miami has neither activated Shaq Barrett nor released him from the reserve/retired list

Shaq Barrett, a former Miami Dolphins Pass rusher, has requested to be reinstated to the NFL after four months of retirement. His rights were due to his one-year contract with the Dolphins in the spring of 2024. Miami has neither activated Barrett nor released him from the reserve/retired list, meaning no other team could sign the pass rusher as of Thursday afternoon. Barrett has now been banned from playing in 2024 and his contract runs until next year. So if the pass rusher wants to play in 2025, he will be under contract with the Dolphins.

Barrett played nine seasons in the National Football League (NFL). He played college football for the Nebraska-Omaha Mavericks before moving to the Colorado State Rams. Barrett signed as an undrafted free agent for the Denver Broncos after the 2014 NFL Draft. He spent five seasons there, including winning Super Bowl 50, before moving to the USA Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Barrett’s level of play rose after he led the league in sacks and made the Pro Bowl and All-Pro teams in 2019. He also won Super Bowl LV in 2021 and recorded a sack in the game; Barrett signed with the Miami Dolphins in 2024 and retired from football shortly thereafter.

Barrett announced via Instagram that his wife Jordanna is pregnant with their fifth child, a daughter due on November 1, 2024.
