Tyreek Hill laments the public focus on gambling and fantasy football

MIAMI GARDENS – Miami Dolphins star receiver Tyreek Hill wants people upset about their fantasy football team or sports betting to not confront him about it in public.

“It’s like I can’t even enjoy an evening with my wife and kids,” Hill said Thursday. “Someone always comes up to me and says, ‘I drafted you number one and you had the worst fantasy football season of your career.’ And it’s like, bro, I literally don’t care.

Hill, 30, was a Pro Bowler for the first eight years of his career.

Last season, Hill had 1,799 receiving yards. So far this year he has 523.

“We don’t really care about any of that, buddy,” Hill said. “As long as we win. I feel like a lot of people are confusing football.

Hill said he talked to his father about how some things had changed.

“A lot of people have taken the game that I loved as a kid and turned it into betting and made fantasy numbers and things like that,” Hill said.

It’s a Catch-22 for the NFL.

You benefit from the increased interest through fantasy football and sports betting.

But it can lead to fans — short for “fanatical,” of course — behaving less rudely toward players.

Dolphins tight end Jonnu Smith, who has been producing more lately, said he hears complaints about fantasy football mostly on social media.

“Man, people are going crazy,” Smith said. “I mean, I’ve seen some bad… wild things, like fans attacking players and not getting them 10 points. ‘You couldn’t get me five points?’ or whatever it may have been.

Smith says he has a larger concern.

“I’m trying to do everything I can for the organization, the city,” Smith said. “We put our bodies at risk. It’s much bigger than some fantasy points.”

When does Tyreek expect to see more big plays that we think will lead to more points?

“Tua (Tagovailoa) understands what he’s up against on the field, so whenever the time comes, he’s going to get his shot,” Hill said. “Can you understand me? It just wasn’t our moment.”
