USC vs. Notre Dame: D’Anton Lynn’s improved defense faces its toughest test

When D’Anton Lynn inherited one of the worst defenses in college football, it was assumed that even a mediocre performance would make a big difference at USC. Especially in combination with one of the most electrifying offenses.

A year later, Lynn’s defense has made significant progress. USC jumped from 121st to 32nd in point defense, from 119th to 43rd in rush defense, and from 119th to 65th in total defense, while its third-down conversion rate, The defense’s red zone conversion rate, missed tackles, and explosive plays given up all dropped significantly. But the Trojans (6-5, 4-5 Big Ten) still struggled, barely qualifying for the bowl.

It was the lowest moment of the season for USC’s young offense, a low point in September that would surely linger long after the Trojans returned from their first Big Ten game. But when Lincoln Riley looks back two months later at where the tide began to turn for his Trojans’ front office, the coach somewhat surprisingly points to that nightmarish afternoon in Ann Arbor.

“Since then,” Riley said Tuesday, “I feel like we’ve been going pretty steadily uphill the whole way.”

The needles never bothered Woody Marks. Especially because he never looks at her. All USC’s star running back knows is that every Wednesday his acupuncturist inserts them into the muscle that’s sore that week.

“I just close my eyes,” says Marks, “and let him do it.”

Some you win, some you lose. At USC, this is a recipe for a terrible football season.

The 5-5 Trojans, who play UCLA in the Rose Bowl on Saturday night, have blown fourth-quarter leads in all five of their losses. It’s a dramatic departure from the promise of two years ago, when head coach Lincoln Riley went 11-3 in his debut season.

The competition was tight. Closer than anyone expected, at least at the end of August. Close enough that at the time Jayden Maiava, the rebel transfer from Nevada Las Vegas, believed he had done enough to be named USC’s starting quarterback.

The job ultimately went to Miller Moss, the redshirt junior whose six-point crowning achievement had come months earlier in the Holiday Bowl. In this case, Maiava understood the uphill battle he faced when he came to LA. But while the decision was no surprise to the public, it was no less disappointing to Maiava.

Hello everyone! I’m Ryan Kartje, your USC beat writer at the LA Times, coming to you caffeinated and fuming after a very late, rainy night at the Rose Bowl. This wasn’t the type of triumphant rivalry victories that will go down in the annals of major crosstown showdowns, but by escaping UCLA, the Trojans managed to earn their sixth win of the season and officially secure a bowl game.
