The Dallas Cowboys are continuing their longstanding tradition of playing on Thanksgiving Day. They will have to do without their starting quarterback for their 2024 game against the New York Giants.

Dak Prescott will not be available to play on Thanksgiving. He missed his fourth straight contest after suffering a hamstring injury in Week 9 against the Atlanta Falcons.

Instead, backup Cooper Rush will make his fourth straight start and try to make it two straight wins as Dallas tries to claw its way back into the playoff race.

Prescott’s absence marks just the second time in his nine-year NFL career that he has missed a Thanksgiving start. The first came in 2020 when he suffered a season-ending ankle injury in Week 5 against the Giants.

Why isn’t Dak Prescott playing on Thanksgiving?

Prescott will not play on Thanksgiving because he suffered a season-ending hamstring injury in the team’s game against the Falcons. It wasn’t clear exactly when the veteran was injured, but he left the contest in the fourth quarter and did not return.

The Cowboys originally hoped that Prescott wouldn’t be sidelined long because of his hamstring problem. Eventually, it was reported that he would be out for “several weeks” with the injury before it became clear that he would require surgery to repair the injury. That prompted Dallas to place him on IR and announce his season was over.

What happened to Dak Prescott?

Prescott suffered a partial hamstring tear – a tear in which part of the tendon tears away from the bone – during Dallas’ 27-21 loss to the Falcons in Week 9. He told reporters after the competition that he wasn’t sure whether the injury occurred while he was running or being attacked.

“This is something I’ve never felt before,” Prescott said while describing the injury. “I went to see the medical team and asked if I could make it any worse. That’s when they told me I couldn’t protect myself and called to stop me.”

According to the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, there are three types of hamstring strains. They are as follows:

A train
A partial crack
A complete tear

Prescott’s injury fell into the latter category, but it was not immediately clear how much of his tendon was torn away from the bone. That has thrown off the timeline, even though the most severe avulsion injuries take “months” to heal, according to the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons.

That’s why there was initially “a reluctance” to place Prescott on IR, as NFL Network’s Jane Slater reported. The quarterback simply wanted to evaluate his options to repair the injury.

Eventually, he and the club decided that surgery would be necessary to correct the condition. That put the NFL’s highest-paid player out of action for the remainder of the 2024 season.

How long will Dak Prescott be out for?

Due to his injury, Prescott will miss the final ten games of Dallas’ season. According to the Cowboys’ official website, he underwent successful surgery to correct the problem on November 13, 2024. He is expected to make a full recovery and return to the field in 2025.

Prescott will be ready to go to training camp barring any setbacks, so his availability for Week 1 of the 2025 NFL season does not appear to be in jeopardy.

Cooper Rush is Prescott’s replacement. Mike McCarthy handed the reins to the 30-year veteran following Prescott’s injury and the Rush went 1-2 in his first three starts while completing 61.1% of his passes for 813 yards, four touchdowns and two interceptions.
