Who killed Jacob? Who gets the house?

SPOILER ALERT: The following reveals the key plot points for No Good Deed on Netflix.

Two of the three couples are competing for Liz Feldman’s Los Feliz house Not a good deed end up getting what they want when the finale comes around.

Just as the layers of the house owned by Paul (Ray Romano) and Lydia Morgan (Lisa Kudrow) are peeled back by three couples desperate to move into the apartment – JD Campbell (Luke Wilson) and Margo Starling (Linda Cardellini), Dennis Sampson (OT Fagbenle) and Carla Owens (Teyonah Parris) and Leslie Fisher (Abbi Jacobson) and Sarah Weber (Poppy Liu) – secrets come to light while the trial is intertwined with the dark history of the Derby Drive house.

About halfway through the series, viewers learn that Lydia and Paul’s son Jacob (Wyatt Aubrey) died one night in a tragic series of events after trying to right some of his mistakes. Jacob had stolen items from neighbors, and at first it appears that Paul and Lydia’s daughter Emily (Chloe East) was responsible for his death because she grabbed a gun and shot him because she thought he was trying to breaking into her house and not realizing who he was.

It turns out that the real culprit was Linda Cardellini’s Margo Starling, whose real name is Luann, and who fired the fatal bullet that killed Jacob. She pursued him because she was afraid he would reveal their affair, so she wanted to silence him.

“This is something that grew organically in the writers’ room. “I always say, ‘I don’t have to be right for it to be good.’ I want the best idea to win,” Feldman told Deadline. “As we sat and talked about this character and the more we developed her and added layers, we realized that she was literally going to be the clincher, partly because we wanted the Morgan family to move on. and we wanted them to be able to absolve themselves and each other. And it felt like there had to be a revelation that was completely outside the box and showed that they blamed themselves and each other. It wasn’t her fault at all.”

Margo, or Luann, whom Feldman described as a “tough bitch” and who she wrote with Linda Cardellini in mind, gets her role at the end of the final episode of Not a good deed When a fire ravages the house where she lives with her husband JD Campbell (Luke Wilson). But Feldman encourages viewers who believe Lydia (Kudrow) might be responsible for the conflagration to watch the film again and look for other clues about how the fire scarred half of Margo’s face. The flames also ended up making it possible for two of the competing families to live on Derby Drive, although JD and Margo do not remain on the now vacant lot after their house burned down. As for who ends up in the Morgan house, the winners of the real estate bid changed after the story concluded.

“I hadn’t originally planned for Leslie and Sarah to get the house, but you walk into a writers’ room, in my case six or seven incredibly talented writers, and we start talking, pitching, thinking and world-building. And at some point we wanted to give her family a happy ending,” Feldman said. “The show was partly inspired by my wife and I looking for a house, so it felt fitting that Leslie and Sarah should end up getting the house. It’s also significant that they are the only two buyers who know exactly what happened and that they choose to live there anyway. That felt like a satisfying ending and an interesting starting point.”

Carla and Dennis ended up on the property across from the Morgans’ old house where JD and Margo had previously lived, and Carla was able to fulfill her wish of building her big dream home from the ground up. But Dennis has some explaining to do about a $1 million check from Carla’s father that he may have used as an advance on his next book, even though the check was for their new baby boy.

“I’m interested in getting in a room with Netflix and talking to them about what I envision for Season 2,” Feldman said when asked if this seed was consciously planted for a possible next episode. “I have a really clear idea of what I want to do and I hope we can do it.”

Although the Morgans’ time in the spotlight may now be over with the handover of the house, the family still had a chance to get back together at the end, which was symbolized by Lydia taking the stage once again to play the piano – which she She also had difficulty accompanying her daughter’s singing during a performance throughout the show. There was tension between her and her daughter Emily throughout the series, but it subsided.

“From the beginning, we wanted (Lydia) to be able to act again, and we found the path to this moment when we developed her daughter, the character of Emily, and we felt that was the most emotionally satisfying path. “Watch her come back to herself,” Feldman said. “I was interested in giving her some version of a happy ending. Obviously, spoiler, she won’t be able to get her son back. Almost in a form of self-punishment, she suffers from this physical illness that prevents her from doing what she loves most, other than her children.”

Even Paul’s big brother Mikey has a bright spot at the end, although for a moment viewers probably thought he was dead and gone forever.

“We always wanted his character to have just a brief, um, loss of consciousness because I was interested in finding a way to get his character to a place of healing,” Feldman said. “Childhood trauma affects people in very different ways, which is what we explore on the show. We came up with the idea that even though Lydia initially did this really terrible thing in a very twisted way, she ends up helping him. This act of desperation and violence on her part ultimately brings him back to life, forcing him to detoxify and face the conflict he has with his son, his brother, and his past. We liked the idea that this very crazy, impulsive act by Lydia ends up somehow leading her back to what she loves to do best, which is being a mother.”
