Wisconsin football has to punt again after another rough possession

Now behind, Wisconsin is getting back to what has worked most this season: running the ball behind the veteran offensive line.

Three 11-yard runs by Darrion Dupree resulted in a first down and the chains moved. But from there, the Badgers continued to decline.

Dupree took a loss on the next run, and then Bradeyn Locke held the ball way too long and was sacked by Minnesota defensive end Danny Striggow, resulting in a loss of 4 yards. Now facing 3rd-and-16, Locke simply threw it to Tawee Walker to his left for 8 yards.

This play ended the first quarter. After the last touchdown drive, Minnesota is now confidently heading into the second quarter with a 7-0 lead.

Something has to change for the Badgers offense if they want to win this game and become bowl eligible.

Max Brosmer’s long pass to Daniel Jackson sets up Minnesota’s touchdown and takes the 7-0 lead over Wisconsin

After failing to score a first down on its first two possessions, Minnesota marched right down the field and picked apart the Badgers’ defense to score the game’s first touchdown.

Gophers quarterback Max Brosmer rushed in for a 1-yard touchdown sneak.

Brosmer, who is No. 1 in program history in completion percentage, was great on the drive.

The TD was set up by wide receiver Daniel Jackson’s spectacular 37-yard over-the-shoulder catch, which brought the Gophers to the Badgers’ 25-yard line.

Wisconsin quarterback Braedyn Locke struggles to start the game

It wasn’t an ideal start for Braedyn Locke.

After two drives, the second-year quarterback already has three deflected balls.

As the CBS broadcast noted, Minnesota will look to put pressure on Locke. He is only completing 30% of his passes when under pressure this season.

Locke was 0 for 2 on the team’s second possession and all the Badgers could muster was 2 yards from Tawee Walker. Luckily for Wisconsin, Minnesota has yet to record a first down on its first two possessions.

Wisconsin and Minnesota both don’t do much on their first possessions

After Minnesota scored three times on its first possession, the Badgers got a first down thanks to an offsides penalty against the Gophers.

But an ineligible receiver on the end of the next down sent the Badgers reeling, and despite a 7-yard reception from Trech Kekahuna, Wisconsin was forced to punt shortly thereafter.

Given the cold temperatures, it feels like a low-scoring game.

Wisconsin vs. Minnesota is the coldest game at Camp Randall in 73 years

It’s cold in Madison.

Very cold.

In fact, at 22 degrees, it’s the coldest kickoff game at Camp Randall Stadium since 1951.

But that doesn’t bother Wisconsin running back Tawee Walker. At one point this morning it was 20 degrees with what felt like -1 degree.

Wisconsin vs. Minnesota football history

Wisconsin vs. Minnesota is one of the most historic rivalries in college football.

The two teams have played each other every year since 1907, making it the second longest continuous rivalry in college football.

The Badgers and Golden Gophers couldn’t be closer in the rivalry. After last year’s win, Wisconsin moved into a tie in the all-time series at 63-62-8.

The teams play for Paul Bunyan’s Axe. And before that famous trophy was introduced in 1948, the Badgers and Gophers played for the “Slab of Bacon” from 1930 to 1943. Yes, it was a strip of wood shaped like bacon.
